University Career Center for Work, Service, and Internships

Typically, Distance Education students work full-time while pursuing a degree part-time so they can achieve greater success in their current career or prepare for a new career. Exploring the next steps on your career path requires thoughtful planning and significant time commitment so that your next move will pay off. How can the University help? Whether you are an undergraduate or graduate student, the staff of the University’s Career Center can provide you with ideas, resources and support to assist you with your exploration of future opportunities.

The University Career Center’s website has a wealth of information available to all students. The distance education office has attempted to package some key highlights for our distance education students to allow you to hone in on how to get started and work your way through the job search process.

How to get started:

  • Explore: It is important to understand your skills, values, and interests, both for developing a career plan and for presenting yourself in an interview. Our office recommends the following to help you gather more information about your career ideas.
  • Experience: Students are expected to use their university experience to gain new skills and knowledge that can be leveraged towards career paths or additional educational pursuits after graduation.
  • Developing your career brand: More than just discovering your career direction and understanding what you offer an employer in terms of skills, knowledge, and experience.
  • Hire a Niner – online job and resume bank
  • Resume building
    1. Make an appointment through your Hire-A-Niner account to work with your Career Advisor.
    2. Take advantage of our Career Guide that provides self-help assistance and templates.
  • Prepare for an interview – mock interviews
    1. On-campus interviewing – obviously most distance education students are unable to make it to campus for on-campus interviews. If you see an employer on Hire-A-Niner that you are interested in and who is scheduled to come to campus, do not hesitate to contact the employer directly to see if they will consider your resume.
    2. Big Interview – mock interviewing in the comfort of your own home. In Big Interview, you can record your own interview responses via webcam and save the file or use it to compare your responses to the demo interviewee’s responses. Access this resource through your Hire-A-Niner account.
  • Use social networking to conduct research and find a job. Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are great for up to the minute career information.
  • If you are able to come to campus, plan to attend one of the career events.
  • If you need individual career advising contact your career advisor. Career Advisors are segmented by major/college. A session is available via telephone. Send your advisor an email to schedule a telephone or Video Chat advising appointment if you are not able to come to campus.
