The University of North Carolina at Charlotte’s Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Reading Education program is designed for experienced, licensed, practicing elementary, middle and high school teachers. Our flexible online master’s program allows you to obtain your M level/advanced license for teaching in the state of North Carolina.

Our online master’s program will help deepen your understanding of evidence-based reading and writing practices and gain the skills to transform student learning. You will prepare to earn your advanced K–12 reading license as you master assessment, curriculum design and diverse instructional approaches to empower all learners.

Courses

The M.Ed. in Reading Education program is 33 credit hours and is offered fully online.  The program is designed as a cohort model.  Students can complete the degree within two years/five semesters.

Phase I: Foundations of Literacy and Leadership (6 credit hours)

Phase II: Developmentally Appropriate Assessment and Instruction (21 credit hours)

  • READ 6255: Middle/Secondary Reading and Writing (3)
  • READ 6204: Teaching Reading to English Language Learners (3)

Students in the Reading Minor can earn up to 12 credit-hours towards the M.Ed. in Reading as undergraduates, about a third of the overall M.Ed. requirements.

Admissions

Application Deadlines: 

  • August 1 (fall)
  • December 1 (spring)
  • April 30 (summer)

Admissions & Requirements: 

  • Complete the Graduate School Admission Application.
  • A bachelor’s degree from a university accredited by a US Department of Education-recognized institutional accreditor.
  • All previous work beyond high school documenting an overall grade point average of at least 3.0 (based on a 4.0 scale).
  • Copies of unofficial transcripts from all academic coursework beyond high school (official transcripts required once accepted into the program).
  • Three recommendations. Applicants will provide reference contact names and email addresses through the application portal.
  • A statement of purpose.
  • Applicants seeking to obtain the Master’s/Advanced competencies “M” license in K–12 reading education must hold an Initial License in any teaching field from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. Teachers who do not hold a teaching license (such as those in charter or private schools) can complete this program, but must understand that our program does not lead to any type of licensure for candidates who do not currently hold a teaching license.
  • Applicants do not necessarily need to be located in North Carolina, but must work with the Office of Teacher Education Advising and Licensure (TEAL) to discuss options and licensure transferability.

Our M.Ed. in Reading Education program meets the International Literacy Association (ILA) standards.
